The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2014 sought to independently assess the research quality of Hong Kong University Grants Committee
(UGC)-funded institutions according to rigorous international standards. The research submissions of all Hong Kong academics were assessed by an
international panel of 307 distinguished experts. HKUST topped the institutional assessment with a remarkable 70% of its submissions rated either
“world leading” (4 star) or “internationally excellent” (3 star), a strong recognition of the research excellence of the University.
